Children utilize nursery rhymes when playing games or learning to read and count. However, the lyrics to many of these seemingly innocent songs have "dark" origins.

I didn't know a lot of these songs had racist connotations. I knew pick a bale of cotton was popularized by black folk singer Leadbelly who was a sharecropper who was said to be able to "pick a bale of cotton in a day." His video from the 1950s is on youtube of it. He was also known for his run-ins with the law and he was charged with attempted homicide for stabbing a white man in a fight. But he was eventually pardoned from because of his song Goodnight irene he sang for the governor.
