I was born in the West Indies
From the seed of Africa
And the womb of America
I have walked in the rainforest
Amongst mahogany trees
And mongoose
I have climbed trees
And eaten their fruit
I was carried to the
American South
Where I lived
In the cradle of
My motherÕs black world
Never realizing
That across the color line
Was a whole different world
Nor did I care
That the mask created by Africans
Was made to hide them
From the invaders
Trying to push them back
And out
I was moved to the
American North
Where I was confronted
Even assaulted
With the reality
That I was black
Which was a nice way
Of calling me a nigger
The guerrilla in the concrete jungle
Owned by Tarzan and Jane
Who were draped in my skin
And the skin of my brethren
To further emphasize
The difference
Between us and them
They took our masks
They played our music
The mocked our mannerisms
And never had any intention
Of giving us credit
For anything more
Than entertainment
Here we are not free
We are scattered
Here we are not valued
We are displays
Here we are not children of God
We are artwork
This is not my home
This is not my motherÕs kin
Nor my fatherÕs ancestors
This is the land
That takes Christian pity
On the helpless
The disadvantaged
And the downtrodden
But will not call them equal
And God save the ungrateful
God save the proud
Cause we donÕt want your revolution
Now that weÕve saved your ass
You owe us your allegiance
