It is mathematics. The most efficient way to colour every map so that no two colours touch each other is to use four colours, three colours will not do it, five are not necessary. However what is the evolution? One colour: the average of all four. Nobody knows how many colours you need to use to keep your distinct colours over time, it is somewhere between 8 and 12 inclusive.
